MOMAR always an adventure

One-day adventure race returns to Squamish for a third year

Preparations are well underway for the third annual Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR) in Squamish, which kicks off the adventure race season on May 23.

Jen Segger, one of the top women in the world in adventure racing, will once again set the course, which will include trail running, mountain biking, orienteering, trekking and rappelling. Organizers are also taking the race into terrain where no organized event has gone before.

"It's an area where people go, but you don't usually see races utilizing this part of Squamish so we're pretty excited to be able to offer something different this year, a kicker at the end," said Segger. "It's a new course in a lot of ways. I think it might be a little easier as far as the biking, but there are some new twists to this and a totally different rappel for the people who've been here the last two years."

There are two course options this year, the regular length Enduro course which is 50 km from start to finish, and a sport course of 30 km, which is better for beginner or less experienced racers. You can race solo or as part of a team.

"We're thinking the short course is going to be really popular," said Segger. "The long course will be really challenging for the elite racers, but we also have a course for people that want to give the sport a try, and we can encourage everybody to go out for it.

"The hard part is really choosing which terrain to use and keeping to a good distance. Every time I look at my map and scout trails I want to use something else. I could honestly plan a five-day race for this area."

MOMAR is also hosting one- and two-day clinics in Squamish and North Vancouver, taught by adventure racer Tom Jarecki. The courses are for beginners, and cover everything from training to nutrition to the basics of orienteering for the navigation section. Squamish Rock Guides and Whistler Core Climbing Gym are also offering a rappelling course for the Squamish race.
