The Red Bull Mount 7 Pyschosis race in Golden is the longest, toughest and steepest downhill mountain bike race in the world with a 5 kilometre course and a vertical drop of more than 4,000 vertical feet.
This year the conditions were perfect, and the field included several veterans of the sport who were going for the course record.
Whistler’s Tyler Morland broke the record and destroyed the competition with a run of 13 minutes, 23.6 seconds, almost 24 seconds faster than second-place finisher Andrew Pohlmann’s 13:47.5. Thierry Prochencher was third in 13:48.9.
Chris Dewar, another Whistler rider, just missed the podium in 13:47.9 after losing time and momentum to a crash.
Chad Onyschuk was 15 th overall out of 50 riders in 14:45:4.
Michael Jones, walking down after a crash and mechanical, settled for last overall in 1:13:11.8.
Only three women raced the complete "Excreamer" course, Mags deGrace in 17:36.1, Jenelle Cassidy in 20:14.8 and Heidi Telstad in 24:05.1.
Meanwhile Whistler’s Kevin Phelps won the hardtail category, clearing the course in an aggressive 16:19.5. He was joined on the podium by Ian Ritz, another Whistler rider, who finished third in 17:21.2, less than 30 seconds back of second place rider John Teghtmeyer.
