Last week B.C. Alpine announced the 2008-09 B.C. Ski Team roster, as well as the participants in a provincial J1 racing program and participants taking part in the summer B2B (Best to the Best) camps at Mt. Hood.

The provincial men’s team will be anchored by Whistler brothers Conrad and Morgan Pridy, formerly of the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC), along with returning skiers Sasha Zaitsoff of Red Mountain and Mathieu Leduc of Mt. Washington.

New to the team this year is Whistler’s Ian Morrison, one of three new recruits. Others include Chistopher Campbell of Timberland Ski Club and Tyler Werry of Fernie.

On the women’s side, Whistler’s Victoria Whitney is back on her skis after missing most of last season to recover from a knee injury and surgery. She is the only female member of the team after veterans Sandra MacDonald and Victoria Glowczynski left the team to race for American college teams. Stanislas Rey, formerly of the WMSC, also stepped down this year but plans to continue racing with the goal of making the national team.

B.C. Alpine also has a new head coach for the program, hiring Chris Mosaed of Calgary to head the team after leading the successful Alberta Team for the past six years. He will be joined by Whistler coach Pierre Luc Dumoulin, who will assist Gregor Druzina in coaching B.C. Alpine’s J1 program this year.

The J1 high performance group, selected after an April camp in Whistler, includes eight WMSC athletes. On the women’s side, the racers are Mackenzie Patterson, Jennifer Meyer, Jocelyn Ramsden and Madison McLeish. The boys are Michael Cadman, Spencer Morris, Willy Konantz, and Ford Swette.

The Best to the Best program, which gives younger athletes a chance to train with national level coaches and alongside World Cup skiers, is holding its annual camp at Mt. Hood in Oregon from June 28 to July 3. From the WMSC, the list of invited boys includes Broderick Thompson, John McIver, Brodie Seger, Logan Pehota, Blake Ramsden, Dalton Pehota, Samuel Kirshenblatt, and Marc Leourx. The invited girls include Kailee Darlington, Morgan Taylor, Kaylie Higgs, Emma King, Charley Field, Rae Swette, Rachel Vander Veen, Kelly Steeves, and Emma Swaffield.

As well, B.C. Alpine announced the winners of several awards.

Benjamin MacLean was one of three recipients of the Bob Parsons Memorial Fund Bursary; Broderick Thompson earned one of two Ski Canada Magazine bursaries; Glenn Goldsmid won the Cary Mullen Award; Bob Deeks and Craig Glenday won B.C. Kinder Coach of the Year honours; and Whistler-Blackcomb won the Mountain Resort of the Year honours.
