Mt. Currie grocery opens By Chris Woodall Spirit Circle restaurant in Mount Currie has expanded to the grocery store business, opening the Spirit Circle market in a building next door. Mount Currie had been without a grocery store since a fire last summer destroyed the Mohawk gas bar and convenience store. "Junk food is competing with organic food," says owner Ellen Devine. The idea had been growing for some time to open an organic food store even while the Mohawk store was operating, Devine says. But with the fire the selection of goods was expanded to a fuller range of convenience store products, bulk foods and a video rental line. "We've pretty much tried to supply all the things people want, from aspirin to batteries," she says. Among organic items are aroma therapy products, seaweeds and sea vegetables. "They are high in calcium and minerals," Devine says of the sea veggies. Kombu seaweed added to a rice dish will make it more nutritious as well as tasty, Devine says. The store has been popular from the get-go. "Oh my gosh, people were thanking me so much," Devine says of not having to motor to Pemberton for basics. Although Devine is big on vegetarian foods, the market isn't narrowly focused. "We even have bacon, so we're doing two worlds," Devine explains. "People like their generic pasta," she says of selling the tried and true. "When summer hits I hope to expand to sell fruits and vegetables outside," she says.
