At just 16 years of age, Rhys Verner of Squamish needed special clearance to attend the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec. He teamed up with Quinn Moberg of Squamish and Evan Guthrie of Peachland for the relay. They placed third behind Ontario in second place and Quebec in first.
Guthrie rode the first stage and handed off to Verner, who raced with a cast on his arm.
"I've competed in the BC Games, Western Canada Games and the Canada Games twice," said Guthrie at the finish line. "This guy (Verner) has been thrown into it for his first time. That's just so cool."
Moberg rode the final leg and sprinted into the finish against a rider from Nova Scotia.
The B.C. women's team was made up of Whistler's Jennifer McTavish, Mikayla Martin of Squamish and Tarryn Cote from Victoria.
The trio rode to a sixth place finish.
"We really feel good about it," McTavish said. "Our goal was to improve every time we did the course. This is just fantastic. I'll be back."
The team events followed cross country racing on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Moberg finished in eighth place and Verner was 14th. Martin also finished in 14th place, one spot ahead of McTavish.
The final events were set for Wednesday, Aug. 7 and results from the sprint event weren't available ahead of the Pique's deadline.
Ontario has a firm lead in the medal count at the national competition. The province had amassed 41 medals between Aug. 2 and Aug. 6. Alberta and Quebec each had 25 medals and B.C. was next in the standings with 17.
