Mr. Whistler

Boys should prepare to get wet

What: Mr. Whistler Pageant

When: Thursday, June 1, 9 p.m.

Where: Moe Joe’s

Tickets: $10/$15/$50

Sitting down with Steve Jiu, producer and host of Whistler’s first Mister Whistler pageant, both of us shared a laugh.

Not at the event poster illustrating Baywatch’s Speedo-clad David Hasselhoff as the Mr. Whistler poster boy, but at the charity group who will benefit from the partial proceeds raised by the Mr. Whistler calendar produced after the pageant.

"It’s going to go to the spay and neuter program at W.A.G. (Whistler Animals Galore animal shelter)," Jiu chuckled.

The event rallies hormones while at the same time snips them at the source.

Jiu, one of the masterminds behind last year’s infamous Fornacoppia burlesque show, assures contestants they have nothing to worry about and invites Whistler hunks to compete for one of the 15 finalist positions and the coveted title of Mr. Whistler Thursday, June 1 at 9 p.m. at Moe Joe’s.

Break out the swimwear, hairspray and six-pack (not the kind you pull from the fridge) for the competition. Handsome hunks will compete in four categories, including talent, formal and swimsuit.

"The talent category will (be) any talent you can do on stage that gets the crowd going, whether it would be signing, male burlesque, guitar, stand-up or just pure talent," Jiu clarified. "The swimsuit category is the hottest category, where the judges will judge on physique and great grooming."

Boys should prepare to get wet, with selected audience members given water bottles to spray down contestants’ oiled up bodies.

Only six of the 15 finalists will move on to the final category: a skill-testing question.

Just a clue, the answer won’t be world peace. So study up on romance, know how and your Hollywood gossip with questions such as who would you rather keep company with, Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie? What are the key ingredients to a romantic picnic?

A panel of astute judges (who all can be happily bribed with truck loads of chocolate) will crown the winner with the title of Mr. Whistler, a $1,000 cash prize and a Mr. Whistler calendar contract. Mr. Whistler will also be expected to wave from a float and sign autographs at the Canada Day Parade in Whistler. If Mr. Whistler is unable to fulfill his duties, a runner up will be chosen to assume his reign.

"He has to love Whistler, has to have a good relationship, must turn left and has to be really, really, really ridiculously good looking for the ladies," Jiu said.

So perfect your best "blue steel" look and fill out an entry form at Farfalla Hair and Esthetics Salon. The entry fee is $10.

In the spirit of pageantry, the event will be a formal one, so ladies break out your party frocks for the event and gentlemen ditch your hoodies and tuques for a night.

Tickets for the first 50 ladies are $10, $15 thereafter. Only 25 $50 tickets will be available for gentlemen.
