Whistler’s music scene this week

Minions in the Creek

Along with a spot on the roster at Monday’s Video Jamboree at the Longhorn, local metal band The Minions will play Creekside this weekend, taking the stage for the Saturday Night Live music night at Dusty’s.

Fronted by metalhead Dave Crowley, the band is best known for dead ringing covers of classic Sabbath, Maiden and other rock lords of the past as well as a much-requested metalized version of Wham!’s Careless Whisper that makes all the girls weak in the knees.

The recent loss of vocalist Brad Makepeace to the demands of fatherhood has relegated Crowley back to full-time vocal duties. So it’s going to be Crowley wailing out the latest additions to the repertoire of Guns ’N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Audioslave and some glam-metal classics by Dokken.

Punch air and bang your head and get ready to rock.

New night for reggae

Moe Joe’s has moved its Monday reggae night to Thursdays starting tonight (Thursday, June 16).

The night features live jams with Whistler reggae collective Kosta Man and the Mighty Backhoes with DJ Phroh. Kosta Man and company are displacing the club’s weekly country-flavoured Cowgirls Inc. night, which has gone on hiatus.

Moe Joe’s will close on Mondays for the time being.

Other Moe Joe’s news… Friday night house band Last Call returns to the stage on June 24 after a well-deserved vacation. Last Call frontman Jason Bonnell will also take back Sunday night at the club.

Punk Night with Vancouver’s hottest

This week’s Punk Night roster has a bit more sex appeal than usual...

Frontwoman Billy The Kid (a.k.a. Billy Pettinger) of pop-punk trio Billy And The Lost Boys is not only renowned for her musical abilities (Chartattack.com said Kid "makes Joan Jett look like a pussycat"), she has been voted "Rocker You Would Most Like To Sleep With" by readers of the Georgia Straight.

They’re not just eye candy. In 2004 Straight readers also awarded the band Best Local Album, Band, Drummer and Guitarist.

It’s likely due to the irrepressible energy the Kid and her Lost Boys cohorts are known to display onstage, which has earned them spots on Warped Tour.

Billy And The Lost Boys will be joined at the Punk Night by The Real Deal and the All Star Assassins. The show goes down Sunday at the Boot Pub.
