W-B Foundation grants go to local non-profits

The Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation has given out more than $200,000 in its latest round of community grants throughout the corridor.

The grants were handed out to a variety of programs, from the Squamish Public Library to the Pemberton Fire/Rescue Department. The money typically goes towards capital equipment.

The single highest grant of $40,000 was given to the Whistler Health Care Centre. That money will go towards the purchase of a trauma room mini C-arm portable x-ray, which helps doctors manipulate bones before putting on a cast.

The Dandelion Daycare Society received $25,000 to replace old flooring at the Whistler Children’s Centre, in addition to $10,000 for a new garbage shed at the Spring Creek Children’s Centre.

The Whistler Adaptive Ski Program, the Whistler Ski Club and the Whistler Valley Snowboard Club all received $10,000 each.

In total, 22 non-profit organizations received grants.

"We have noticed a huge increase in requests for funding as many non-profits, including schools and health care centres, are experiencing major budget cutbacks" said Louise Lundy, executive director of the Whistler- Blackcomb Foundation.

"We are pleased to be in a position to help fill that gap for so many worthy programs."

Since 1993 the foundation has given out more than $2.4 million in the areas of health, human services, education, recreation, arts and culture and the environment, with an emphasis on children, youth and family programs.

Fairmont Chateau welcomes new member to sales team

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler has hired a local sales person with extensive knowledge of the resort to head their sales and marketing team.

Marion Anderson, the new director of sales and marketing, knows a thing or two about selling Whistler as a world-class resort.

Prior to accepting her new position at the 550-room hotel, Anderson was the senior sales manager at Tourism Whistler. She has also been the director of sales with Crown Resort Accommodations in Whistler as well as the director of sales at the Edmonton Convention and Tourism Authority.

"The Fairmont Chateau Whistler holds an international reputation as one of the world’s finest mountain resort hotels," said Anderson.

"I look forward to working with both the team at the Chateau and its many partners in looking for new opportunities to further drive the success of the hotel and the destination as we move into the future."
