Smokin’ Fire-fighter Party The recent Pemberton Fire-fighter’s Association Dinner and Silent Auction held at Willy G’s restaurant proved to be a smokin’ success. Over $3,200 was raised and 100 per cent of that money will go towards supporting the award winning Pemberton Volunteer Fire Department’s Extrication Team. The association would like to send out deep thanks to all of the participants at the dinner and all the businesses and individuals who donated auction items. Health council has Y2K savvy The Sea to Sky Community Health Council is not only aware of Y2K, they report that they have been preparing for the new millennium since the summer of ’98. After checking equipment against both the manufacturer’s specifications and the national clearinghouse guidelines for Y2K compliance it was discovered that the majority of equipment is already okay. Staff have checked systems at the Squamish General Hospital, Hilltop House, Whistler Health Care Centre and Howe Sound Home Support Services. Wasting no time, any equipment that tested negative or where information on compliance couldn’t be found has been detailed and submitted to the Ministry of Health to be replaced or corrected. The ministry has allocated funds for Year 2000 preparedness and will be releasing these shortly, based on need. Contingency plans are also ongoing. With all of this in mind Sea to Sky Community Health Council staff say they are not expecting the move into the millennium to impact the delivery of health care locally. Chateau Whistler Volunteer Fair On April 1 all the positive souls in Whistler will be heading to the Volunteer Fair at the Chateau Whistler, between 5 and 7 p.m. The Empress Ballroom will host the philanthropic gathering, showcasing all of the local non-profit and charitable organizations looking for volunteers. "Whistler’s non-profit and charitable organizations are thrilled about the possibility of reaching out to energetic, motivated individuals," says Sonya Hwang, director of public relations at the Chateau Whistler. "We, believe that, given the opportunity, many of our staff and other members of the community would volunteer if they knew more about the needs of local organizations. We are providing a forum where we hope relationships will start building between potential volunteers and organizations in need." Volunteer opportunities will be available for single events as well as ongoing commitments. Organizations represented will cover all areas, including health, social services, youth development, community relations, culture and the arts. Chateau Whistler employees will be hot property for community groups as they can potentially bring a cheque worth $500 to whatever organization they volunteer with. The Chateau Whistler is launching a new Employee Volunteer Grant Program through the fair, in conjunction Canadian Pacific. Annually CP will contribute $500 to an organization where a CP employee volunteers 50 hours or more in a year. "We think this is a wonderful program." says Hwang. "(It) encourages our staff to volunteer their time to assist others, and makes them feel twice as good because they are making a financial contribution as well. It’s great to see the commitment that Canadian Pacific is making to recognize it’s employees."
