News in 5 Allen Stager was voted Chief of the Mount Currie Band in an election held last Sunday. Stager, who got 184 votes, was followed closely by Raymond Pierre. Former Chief Katherine Wallace did not seek re-election. The 12 member Band Council will be made up of Lyle Leo, Connie Wallace, Matilda Pascal, Rachel Andrew, Shirley Wallace, Patricia Williams, Gloria Wallace, Lois Joseph, Morgan Wells, Bruce Edmonds, Nolan Edmonds and Felicity Nelson. Annette Faessler of Surrey is $5,000 richer after the Jan. 24 early bird draw in the Win A Condo at Whistler lottery. The annual condo lottery is a joint fund raiser in support of the Blackcomb and Whistler Mountain Ski Clubs. Only 4,999 tickets will be sold, at $100 each. Nearly 70 per cent of the tickets had been sold as of last week. The third and final $5,000 early bird draw will be held Feb. 24 at the Going For Gold dinner/auction during the Whistler Mountain Ski Classic World Cup event. If all tickets are sold by Feb. 24 the grand prize draw for a ski-in, ski-out condo at The Aspens on Blackcomb will be made at that time. The grand prize draw is scheduled for March 25. Condo lottery tickets are available by calling 482-3333 or contact a member of the Blackcomb or Whistler Mountain Ski Clubs. The Whistler Valley Housing Society's report on affordable housing will be presented to council at the Feb. 20 committee of the whole meeting. The report, which society members Doug O'Mara and Craig MacKenzie have been working on for the past six months, is expected to present several options for future affordable housing. The organizers of Whistler Gay Ski Week kick off festivities for the event tomorrow when more than 400 people from around the globe arrive in town. Organizers expect the numbers for the event to peak at about 2,000 with highlights including a gala dinner, auction and Sarah Maclachlan concert Thursday. On Saturday Blackcomb is hosting the Ski-a-thon for the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, with all of the proceeds going to the Dr. Peter Centre — a day use facility for those with HIV/AIDS.
