The recent Nike Snowboard Cross event was a full house, drawing 184 competitors and thousands of spectators over the course of the day on Blackcomb.

The track itself was unique for the Feb. 10 event, starting at the DJ shack in the terrain park, winding into the trees, out onto Springboard and back into the trees to finish by the halfpipe.

Racers barely had time to enjoy the scenery, however, as the competition was fierce and the banked turns, hip jumps, whoop-dee-doos and rollers kept everyone on their toes. There were a few collisions, and a lot of racers traded places through the more difficult sections.

The Whistler Valley Snowboard Club was once again a force to be reckoned with, especially in the younger age categories, but a new group on the scene –the Whistler Kids Ride Tribe – gave the club a run for its money.

Vincent Ligeti showed off his versatility and straight up ability once again by taking the top spot in the Junior Open 12 and Under category. He’s now four for four this season, winning both Nike halfpipe contests and the Atomic slopestyle in addition to the snowboard cross.

Jamie MacFarlane made his way to the podium once again, followed by Dan Barker. All three are members of the WVSC. Jack Lundon of the Ride Tribe made the final cut and finished fourth.

In the Junior Girls 13 to 15 field, local Katie Morgan took the wiin ahead of Christen Young of the WVSC, Beth Chiasson of the Ride Tribe, and Devon Brooks of Richmond.

The Junior Guys 13 to 15 went to Grady Widdess, James Crowe and Marc Mains, all of the WVSC. Duncan Sabiston of West Vancouver crossed the line fourth.

In the Amateur Women 16 and Over bracket, Vairdy Andrews of Vancouver edged past local Peta Woolnough and Cathy Donaldson of North Vancouver.

The Amateur Men 16 and Over category went to local Cody Lafrance, followed by Adam Friesen of the WVSC, Andrew Cyr of Bellingham, Washington, and local boarder Ian Giesbrecht.

Local Tanya Simonson was the top Pro woman, followed by Amy Quan, Candice Graham and Holly McPhail.

Damon Hayler was the guy to catch in the Pro Men’s field. Brody Peterson, Brent Kroeker and Turner Montgomery took the last three spots. All are locals.

There will be another snowboard cross this weekend on a slightly different course, and in light of the fact that the last event was completely sold-out, organizers are asking competitors to register early at Guest Relations or by calling 932-3434.
