The three Canadian lugers were shut out at Day 2 of the FIL Junior World Cup at Whistler Sliding Centre on Friday.
With the junior men and women competing, Calgary's Rachel Klassen posted the best Canadian result of the day with an eight-place showing, posting a time of 1:19.269 minutes, which was 0.447 seconds behind champion Jessica Tiebel of Germany. Germany swept the podium, with Saskia Langer taking silver and Julia Taubitz earning bronze. Tiebel jumped from third into gold position after posting the event's fastest run of 39.314 seconds.
Pemberton's Jenna Spencer finished 10th with a time of 1:19.522.
On the men's side, the midway leader also could not hold on.
Russia's Roman Repilov even bested his first run, but succumbed to charges from winner Alex Ferlazzo (1:42.180) of Australia and silver medallist Sebastian Bley of Germany, who finished just 0.001 seconds behind Ferlazzo.
Even though he was in second place after the first heat, Ferlazzo knew there were places he could make up time.
"I knew my first run wasn't all that good, and it didn't feel very good either," he said. "In the second run, once I got through (turn) 13, it lit up to me - 'damn, I'm going fast now.'
"I was stoked, I can't even describe it."
Calgary's Greg Doucette was the only Canadian in the men's race, finishing 11th, 1.083 seconds back of Ferlazzo.
The second Youth A event and Junior doubles will run tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m., and the second Junior event will run Sunday, also starting at 9 a.m.
