Nordic clubs face off in season opener

Opening Coast Cup draws over 120 racers

The rivalry between local nordic ski clubs in the region is heating up along with the popularity of cross-country ski racing, with the result that over 120 racers turned out to the opening Coast Cup of the season.

The race, hosted by the Hollyburn Cross Country Club at Whistler Olympic Park on Sunday, enjoyed clear skies and fast conditions.

In the Atom Boys 0.6km freestyle race, it was Pemberton's Spud Valley Nordics all the way with the win going to Jack L'Estrange, followed by teammates Brock Jean and Alex Fuez. Feliz Parron of the Squamish Nordics was fourth.

In Atom Girls 0.6km, Elle Johnston of the Whistler Nordics placed first by a long margin, followed by Savannah McKinney Lincks of the Spud Valley team and Emma Levine of the Squamish Nordics. Sierra Johnston of Whistler was fourth.

In Pee Wee Boys 2km, Mike Murdoch led a Whistler Nordics podium sweep, placing first of 18 athletes. Teammates Fraser Doak and Sam Johnston rounded out the podium in second and third, while Joe Davies was fourth. Ian Davidson was sixth for the Whistler Nordics and Ben Hepditch 17th. Jonathan Rabung-Simeon of Spud Valley was 15th.

In Pee Wee Girls 2km, Maxine Forder of Hollyburn took the win, followed by Whistler Nordics skiers Lauren Kilfoy McKay and Benita Peiffer. Also from Whistler, Mila Wittenberg was fifth and Lily MacConnachie 10th. From Spud Valley, Alisa Feuz was sixth, Cassia Jean seventh, Sakura Kawano eighth and Hannah L'Estrange 13th. Hannah Levine of the Squamish Nordics was 12th.

In Midget Boys 2km, Cam Fitzmaurice and Rowan Morris of Hollyburn were first and second, followed by Whistler Nordics skiers Erik Heilig and Hunter Sones.

In Midget Girls 2km, Annika Richardson, Dot Forder and Emily Handford of Hollyburn swept the podium. Julia Long of the Whistler Nordics was seventh, followed by Kaede Kawano of the Spud Valley Nordics in eighth.

Kayden Sim of Hollyburn beat teammate Max Lindley-Peart in the Juvenile Boys 4km category. There were no other racers in that group.

In Juvenile Girls 4km, Katie Weaver of Hollyburn was first, followed closely by Lauren Doak of the Whistler Nordics. Allison Marlyn of Hollyburn was third.

In Junior Boys 7.5km, Lucas Putnam-Rea, Adam Woods and Fred Weaver swept the podium for Hollyburn. Birken Metza of the Whistler Nordics was seventh.

In Junior Male 10km, Geoffrey Richards was first, followed by Martin Schrama and the Whistler Nordics Colin Abbott.

In Junior Female 5km, Kirsty Bock of the 100 Mile Nordics was first, trailed closely by the Whistler Nordics' Nicki Murdoch. Maya Guttmann was third for Hollyburn, with Hollie sones of Whistler in fourth.

In Open Men 7.5km, Elliot Holtham of the Nordic Racers was first, followed by UBC racers Eric Carter and Alexis Guigue. Brent Murdoch was eight for the Whistler Nordics, with Robbie Metza in 12th, William Geddes in 14th, Crosland Doak in 16th and Ian Reith in 18th.

In Open Women 5km, Heather Taddy and Megan Wolfe of the Nordic Racers were first and second, followed by Tracy Moore of the 100 Mile Nordics. Cheryl Morningstar of the Whistler Nordics was fourth.
