Not quite lost

Salomon offering free orienteering evening

If you run into someone running around the woods of Lost Lake Park on Monday, chances are they’re not lost – they’re just looking for their next checkpoint.

Salomon is hosting a free evening of orienteering on Monday, June 12 with the help of Whistler Running Experience. Salomon will be providing maps, compasses and other tools, as well as a brief introduction on how to use them. Participants will need some shoes for trail running, a watch to keep track of time, proper clothing for the weather conditions, and a sense of adventure.

The competition will get underway at 6 p.m. sharp, and the course will cover about 5 km of terrain, give or take, depending on your navigation skills.

"It’s for people who want to get an idea of what orienteering is all about," said Duncan Munro, who is setting the course. "There’s basic map reading, trail running, and navigation.

"A lot of it will be pretty straight forward, but there will be some bushwhacking and some very key instructions on the piece of paper we give out so people will have to pay attention to the clues."

It’s meant to be a solo event, but if enough people show up organizers will make it a team event.

Salomon has also donated draw prizes to the event, including shoes, clothing and hats, and will be sponsoring the post-race party.

To take part meet at the Salomon Store in the Westin Resort and Spa between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. The event gets underway at 6 p.m.
