Old physio equipment heading south

Local physiotherapist Susie Mortensen asked Whistlerites to go digging for old physio equipment tucked away in forgotten corners.

Local physiotherapist Susie Mortensen asked Whistlerites to go digging for old physio equipment tucked away in forgotten corners.

She was rewarded with an SUV full of treasures that will soon make their way to desperate clinics in Latin America through the Latin America Development Society.

Throughout the fall people donated their used physio equipment to the cause. Among the collected items were six pairs of crutches, three knee immobilizers, four lumbar supports, 12 knee braces and a traction unit.

LADS has been sending shipping containers to Latin America for the past 14 years.

Each year three containers with goods totalling over half a million dollars in each make their way to hospitals, clinics and medical posts in Latin America.

LADS founder Bayron Figueroa said he accepts everything "from a needle to a submarine" with a focus on hospital and clinical supplies.

Mortensen said she will keep one box at Whistler Physio in the Marketplace for anybody else who wants to donate throughout the year.
