Last year's champion among Sea to Sky communities has put up a challenge for bragging rights as to which is the most energy conscious.

Pemberton was the undisputed winner in 2009 among Sea to Sky communities, reducing its electricity use by 4.6 per cent. Now it wants to see if another community can do better.

Pemberton Councillor Lisa Ames is challenging all Sea to Sky communities to reduce their electricity consumption by five per cent during Earth Hour, which takes place March 27 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

She's proposing that the council from the community with the lowest reduction in electricity consumption host the other two councils for an evening social to discuss ways they can all work together to reduce their carbon footprint.

Refreshments, she said, must be sourced locally... specifically foods such as Pemberton beef, vegetables from North Arm Farm and Schramm Vodka.

Ames is asking that everyone participate in Earth Hour and suggest their own challenges for friends, family, teams, businesses or communities.

"Even small changes can make a big difference," she said in a news release.

Whistler's council unanimously accepted Pemberton's challenge this Tuesday.

"I could be a tough one for us, but I think we can do it," said Whistler councillor Eckhard Zeidler.
