Phat Wednesday sees 150 riders participating

Paul Stevens fastest racer in Open Men; Chris Kovarik comes second

The Phat Wednesday downhill series returned after the Crankworx break on Aug. 3 with a rip down Angry Pirate, Samurai Pizza Cat and Ho Chi Min. Over 150 riders came out.

Paul Stevens was the fastest racer in Open Men with a time of 3:41.98, followed by Chris Kovarik in 3:42.52 and Than Rankin in 3:43.87. Rounding out the top 10 were Sam Perry, Tyler Morland, Shane Gayton, Simon Buzacott, Dan Skogland, Denis Courchesne and Stephen Matthews.

Claire Buchar kept her winning streak alive in the Female category with a time of 4:06.87, followed by Sarah Leishman in 4:19.76 and Katrina Strand in 4:27.20. Also in the top 10 were Kelly Ann Rooney, Julie Istvan, Simmone Lyons, Rachelle Frazer, Kate Whitley, Amber Price and Laure Vailly.

In Junior Male the top spot went to Julio Cesar Leondro in 3:48.97, followed by Zander Geddes in 3:58.02 and Addison MacDonald in 4:19.47. Rounding out the top 10 were Chad Wallin, Bill Harpum, Jimmy Schweter, Taylor Stowell, Adam Woodhouse and Kolt Hoyle.

In Master Male it was Dave Harder up front in 3:47.89, followed by Chris Dewer in 3:49.49 and Len Hornidge in 3:50.81. In the top 10 were Mathieu Hebert, Steve Storey, Richard Bedford, Andrew Gunn, Jon Moon, Todd Hellinga and Corrie Mullin.

In the prize draw the Sram drive train went to Chris Kovarik, the GoPro helmet cam to Kate Whitley, the Truvativ pedals to Kenji Conzales, the Truvativ cranks to Ollie Lynch, the Kali helmet to Mike Gambel and the goggles from Garbanzo Bike and Bean to Shayne Gayton.

The next Phat Wednesday races are on Aug. 17 and Aug. 31, while the last two PhaSt Wednesday races - for experts only - were on Aug. 10 (results to follow), with the final on Aug. 24.

To race, you must be a member of the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association and pay a $2 entry fee that will go towards the top riders in each category. You also need a valid lift pass to ride the bike park.

Sign-on starts at 5 p.m. at the Garbanzo Bike and Bean patio, and the races get underway at 6 p.m.
