A man who allegedly used a fraudulent debit card to purchase jewelry last month was caught on camera.
The incident happened on March 30 at a jewelry store in the village. Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said a clerk at the store reported to police that the chip on the man's debit card didn't work.
"A male had attempted to purchase a gold pendant and necklace for around $4,800," said LeClair.
The chip didn't work so the man punched in the card's digits manually and the clerk said the transaction seemed to complete successfully. After reading the authorization number, the clerk realized it wasn't valid. The point of sale debit provider was contacted. The process took some time so the suspect reportedly gave the clerk a contact number and left with what happened to be the store's two most expensive pieces of jewelry.
Anyone who recognizes the suspect from the security camera image is asked to contact the Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044.
Snowmobile riders rescued
Two men riding snowmobiles in the Rainbow Lake and Sproatt area on Thursday, April 3, decided they were lost just after 2:30 p.m.
They called a friend and the concerned friend called the RCMP. By communicating through text message and phone calls, the police learned one man had suffered a wrist injury and ankle injuries. The injured sledder couldn't ride out of the backcountry.
Whistler Search and Rescue was called in and a volunteer team of searchers helped get the two men back to their vehicle after darkness had set in.
LeClair said one of the men was a 29-year-old from Langley and the other was a 30-year-old from Fort McMurray, AB.
Masturbator nabbed in parking lot
A Pemberton man is facing charges after a woman noticed the man masturbating in a car parked in one of Whistler's busiest parking lots.
The concerned woman reported the incident to police on Wednesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
"She observed a male masturbating in a parked car in the Marketplace parking lot at approximately 2:45 p.m.," said LeClair. "She described the car, which had a Washington license plate. She provided a description of the suspect."
Police went to the parking lot and found the suspect in the car.
"Police observed the male's belt and pants were undone," said LeClair.
"We're looking to see if this is related to other incidents of indecent acts."
A report is being prepared for Crown counsel and Crown counsel will ultimately decide if there is enough evidence to lay charges.
