Police in Squamish and Whistler had a busy week responding to reports of thefts, especially thefts of bikes. In Whistler, police received five reports of bike thefts, while four were stolen in Squamish, including one bike worth over $6,000.

As well, police in both communities received reports of other thefts, including break-ins to vehicles. Two vehicles were broken into overnight at the Cheakamus Lake parking lot, with roughly $2,000 in gear reported stolen on July 6.

In Squamish, police received a report of a vehicle broken into at the Murrin Lake parking lot on July 2, with thieves taking an MEC purse, a MEC trifold wallet with a neck strap, identification and bank cards, a USB key, an iPod Shuffle, a blue LG 55/10 cell phone, Ray-Ban sunglasses and other items. As well, police found seven vehicles broken into in the Bracken Park Way area after they received a call regarding two men attempting to break into a shed. Police called in a forensics team to search for prints and other clues.

There were also five residential break and enters in Squamish, with thieves taking items ranging from bikes to computers.

Bikes should always be locked and secured, even if being left for a short time, and brought inside whenever possible and locked again.

If you have any information on any of these cases, contact the Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044, the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Boyfriend arrested after assaulting girlfriend in park

On July 2 at 2 p.m., the Whistler RCMP received several calls regarding a domestic assault in progress in Lost Lake Park. According to the police, the girlfriend approached people screaming that she had just been assaulted by her boyfriend.

He had left the area at that point, but returned and was seen shoving his girlfriend down an embankment along the side of the trail.

There were no serious injuries, but police arrested a 34-year-old male from Vancouver and held him in custody before he was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Male arrested for breach

The RCMP arrested and held a male for breach of his release conditions after he was intercepted by police at 1 a.m. on July 6. A police foot patrol saw the 34-year-old male from North Vancouver being ejected from a bar for causing problems, and after detaining him as intoxicated they learned that he was under orders not to be found in Whistler following a previous arrest for break and enter, obstructing a police officer and theft. The male was held overnight in custody until he could appear in court the next day.

IIO investigating Squamish arrest

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirmed on July 5 that investigators have been deployed to Squamish regarding an incident that occurred on July 2 at 2:05 a.m.

According to the RCMP report, an officer responding to a complaint arrested a male who was placed in cells. After several hours the male complained of pain, and he was subsequently taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with an arm injury.

The IIO was notified that morning, and will investigate to see whether police actions were responsible for the man's injuries, and whether he was treated properly once in custody.

TriBal police make second drug bust in a week

On July 6, officers from the Stl'atl'imx Tribal Police Service attended a residence in Mount Currie where they executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant. Police arrested two females and two males for trafficking a schedule II drug under the act — specifically 380 grams of marijuana, plus three rifles and $1,500 in cash. Charges are still pending.

The incident is not related to last week's drug bust. On June 29 police executed a search warrant at another residence, resulting in charges for two individuals for trafficking cocaine, trafficking marijuana and careless use of a firearm, while seizing 380 grams of cocaine, 350 grams of marijuana, $6,000 in cash, a rifle, a machete and a concealed knife. Those arrests were the result of a lengthy investigation by Stl'atl'imx Tribal Police Services.
