The Whistler Mountain Bike Park's new pump track will get a workout this weekend with a spot in Crankworx on the line.
The GMC Pump Track Challenge will run this Saturday, July 23 beginning at 10 a.m. Groms as young as 10 are invited to take part in Heat 1 beginning at 11 a.m. while the open categories for those 17 and older will race as part of Heat 2 beginning at 1 p.m. Finals will run from 3:30 to 4 p.m. with the awards being given out at 5 p.m. at the pump track. The top five racers from Heat 1 and then the top 10 males and top five females from Heat 2 will advance.
Whistler Blackcomb events manager Seb Fremont expects between 40 and 50 people, primarily from the Sea to Sky corridor, to sign up, basing those numbers off of a kids' event that took place at the track on July 16.
"I think it'll be a great little showcase of the venue. People should have a good time," he said. "We're taking a couple people over to Crankworx. They'll qualify for the qualifiers. I think that'll be a big enticement."
Fremont noted the pump track is a bit smaller than the track used at Crankworx, adding the event will use a time-trial format as opposed to a head-to-head one.
"We'll look at who has the best time at the end of the day and go from there," he said.
