Whistler draws a unique collection of artists and local musicians and every so often Pique will spend some time catching up with who's out there.
This week's Q&A is with local DJ Fidel Ca$hflow (Phil Vienneau), which is either the most ridiculous or the most brilliant aliases of all time, depending on how you look at it.
Pique : So, who is Fidel Ca$hflow?
Fidel Ca$hflow : It's a name that actually (local DJ) Mike Grefner and I had come up with years ago and it just kind of stuck. It was a little bit of a joke and it just stuck.
Pique : Are you aware that there is another Fidel Cashflow?
FC : Yeah there is. I've heard that.
Pique : He's a rapper.
FC : Yeah, unfortunately. ( laughs)
Pique : Have you ever had any contact with him?
FC : No.
Pique : How would you resolve a dispute over names with this guy?
FC : (laughs) Um, jeez. That's a good question. I don't know. I'd have to battle him. To the death.
Pique : When did you decide to become a DJ?
FC : Um, that was about six years, seven years ago maybe?
Pique : And where'd this decision come from?
FC : We were just throwing shows back home and I just had the gear and it was sitting around collecting dust between shows basically so I just started doing a few (shows) and really enjoyed it.
Pique : Where's home?
FC : Red Deer, Alberta.
Pique : And how long have you been in Whistler?
FC : I've been here now, I think, it's my fourth season.
Pique : And do you plan on leaving?
FC : No. No. I love it man. I'm living the dream here. Yeah.
Pique : What is it about Whistler that makes it for you?
FC : The people....everything, everything about it actually. The mountains, the air, the lakes. Summertime, the winter. Everything about it.
Pique : What's your biggest moment so far in terms of being a DJ?
FC : Jeez, I don't know. There's been so many since I've been here to be honest with you. I couldn't pick one.
Pique : Well then name a few.
FC : Just getting to play with some of the international touring DJs that have come through. Playing alongside Mat the Alien has been a highlight for sure. He's been one of my favourites forever.
Pique : What's been your biggest dream then as far as taking it with being a DJ?
FC : It's not so much about being a DJ but also producing music. I actually just finished watching TRON and what Daft Punk did with the soundtrack is incredible. To do a movie like that would be something else.
Pique : Do you produce your own music now?
FC : I do. I'm working on that myself right now. I'm just very picky. I'm my biggest critic so once I'm happy with something then I'll pursue a little further.
Pique : What's your worst gig ever?
FC : Worst gig ever? Um, I don't know. I don't think there's been a bad one. I've had bad moments I suppose where things don't work out as planned but you know, every gig's a good gig, I think.
Pique : That's a positive outlook.
FC : Yeah, I like it. I really enjoy what I do, so that's why I say there hasn't been a bad gig. Every gig's a good gig, I think.
