He missed Whistler’s epic powder season, but duty called. Australia’s Lewis Mearns bumped his Whistler flight plan ahead to accommodate DJ gigs around Australia and New Zealand, including spinning to 20,000-plus crowds at the Rhythm and Vines New Year’s Eve Festival in Gisborne, New Zealand.
He finally arrived and instead of carving turns, he’s scratching up records as the new resident DJ for LUNAFliks, showing every Thursday night for July and August.
“I am pretty impressed with the set up,” said Mearns, more famously known as DJ FSU. “Lost Lake is great and it looks like the sun is going to stay for Thursday, so I may throw in some party beats.”
LUNAFliks, presented by Sharp’s Audio-Visual, screens indie films every Thursday evening under the stars at Lost Lake Park. The season kicks off July 5 with clear skies, 19-degree temperatures and A Scanner Darkly .
Director Richard Linklater reprises the digital-rotoscope animation style he pioneered in Waking Life in A Scanner Darkly , starring red-carpet royalty Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder.
DJ FSU will warm LUNAFlik crowds up before the film begins at dusk (around 10 p.m.).
Kiwi-land’s big dub and reggae scene left its mark on the Auckland University of Technology student, who was on major rotation of all the uni parties. He has also spun in Australia, France and England as part of Big Company.
He now adds Whistler to his credits, dialing in ragga breaks and drum ’n’ bass for the LUNA, booze-free event.
“I like it loud in the red lights,” he said. “I’ll ease into the night with roots reggae to begin with and see where it goes from there.”
Filmgoers are encouraged to bring something to sit on, warm layers (it gets cold once the sun sets), a picnic and/or friends.
Entry is $3 for LUNA members and $5 for non-members.
Bus service is available to and from LUNAFliks starting at 9 p.m. for $.50 on the WAVE bus leaving from the bus loop up from Skier’s Plaza.
