RCMP: members concerned by items thrown from balconies

No injuries but a few close calls reported

Whistler seems to get its crime in sprees. Sometimes it's car or bike thefts, or debit card fraud, and there are usually a few suspects behind it. In other cases it's completely random, like a period of a few weeks last year where numerous "dine and dash" thefts were reported at local restaurants involving different suspects, or the recent calls of items being thrown from balconies.

In the past week the RCMP have attended three complaints of items being thrown from windows and balconies onto the Village Stroll. The previous week a cyclist was hit in the head with a beer bottle while riding down Northlands and a few weeks before that there was a case of partiers throwing cutlery, kitchenware and other items off a balcony near Town Plaza.

There were no injuries as a result of the most recent three calls, although there were some close calls according to the RCMP.

Just before midnight on Sept. 2, the RCMP patrol received complaints of bottles being thrown from a balcony along the Village Stroll and when they attended they found two men cleaning up the damage - glass and food debris strewn around the stroll, as well as a broken blender. Police questioned the subjects, who said they didn't want to get blamed for what happened. The police believe the items were thrown from a fourth floor balcony and that the men were responsible themselves or knew who was responsible, and are continuing to investigate.

At about 12:40 a.m. on Sept. 4, the RCMP attended a complaint in the village after men were almost hit by three to five beer cans that were likely thrown from a hotel. Nobody was injured, but the cans came close to pedestrians and appear to have been thrown from a high point like the roof of a hotel or one of the upper rooms.

As well, the RCMP received another call on Monday night regarding a fight that broke out in a unit near Town Plaza, where various items were thrown onto the Village Stroll.

All three incidents are under investigation by the police, who are treating it as a serious public safety issue. If you have any information, contact the Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Police called to fights

A 25-year-old woman from Maple Ridge will be appearing in court in October to answer charges of assault with a weapon, after hitting another woman across the face with a bottle during a fight in a Whistler nightclub.

When RCMP attended the nightclub they found the injured woman outside with cuts to her face. No word on the extent of injuries, but RCMP have heard that she received between nine and 13 stitches for at least two cuts on her face.

The police walked her to the road where she was taken to the Whistler Health Care Centre by ambulance for treatment. Meanwhile the RCMP located the suspect nearby, based on descriptions from witnesses.

At 12:50 a.m. on Sept. 3 the RCMP responded to a fight in progress around Village Green. They attended and observed two males pushing four other males. When they approached, the two males ran away, both resisted arrest when they were caught. The men told officers they were enticed into the fight by the other group, but nearby officers that witnessed the incident said it was the two men that were being aggressive. Both men - a 26-year-old and 28-year-old from Port Coquitlam - were intoxicated and were arrested for being drunk in public. They were held in cells overnight and released with fines for disturbing the peace.

At 11:17 p.m. on Sept. 3, RCMP was dispatched to a fight in Village Green area after a report of three men fighting. The RCMP attended and found the men in a wooded area nearby, and discovered that all three men involved were friends. One of the men was intoxicated and was trying to start fights all night, including with his friends. After the other two men said they couldn't control their friend he was arrested and lodged in cells. A 22-year-old from Whistler was released the next morning with a fine of $115 for being intoxicated.

On Sept. 4 at 12:42 a.m. the RCMP received a report of a fight in a local nightclub that ended up on the street outside. Two groups from the Lower Mainland were involved, but were gone by the time the RCMP arrived. Later that evening an RCMP patrol identified the men based on a description from witnesses, and one of the men said the fight was over a jealousy issue. There were no injuries and no arrests were made.

Two injured in motorcycle crash

A husband and wife on a Harley Davidson were treated for a variety of injuries after their vehicle left the road just after 5 p.m. on Sept. 4. According to the RCMP, the vehicle was travelling on the highway from Joffre Lakes towards Mt. Currie, and had passed several vehicles over the double yellow line before pulling back into the right lane. The driver hit some gravel and skidded out.

They were taken to the Pemberton Clinic for treatment of injuries to their shoulders and backs - and possibly some broken ribs. Their injuries were not life threatening and they were issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention.
