Former assistant fire chief Geoff Playfair is re-joining the Whistler Fire Rescue Service (WFRS).

He has been hired as the new chief following the retirement of current chief Sheila Kirkwood, which takes effect in September.

Said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden of the appointment in a release: "Congratulations on your new position as fire chief, Geoff, and welcome back to the Whistler Fire Rescue Service. The community and our organization will benefit from your experience and expertise in this integral leadership position."

Playfair retired from the WFRS in 2012 after a more than 30-year career and rising to the rank of assistant fire chief.

He has remained a paid on-call assistant fire chief since retirement, as well as working as a sessional instructor at the Justice Institute of B.C. He is also a guide manager with Tyax Adventures.
