Showcase Showdown heads to the park

The Showcase Showdown has never been an event to stand still, with the formula changing ever year or two to keep things fresh.

The Showcase Showdown has never been an event to stand still, with the formula changing ever year or two to keep things fresh.

For example, last year's Showdown was a Backyard Jam, a miniature slopestyle event similar to the events locals have hosted in their backyards and driveways around Whistler over the years. The year before that it was "pipestyle," a hybrid halfpipe and slopestyle competition.

On Saturday, April 3 the Showdown moves up Blackcomb Mountain to the Nintendo Terrain Park. It will feature a big air jump followed by a quarterpipe with a few re-entry features to make things a little more interesting.

"As always, our main purpose is to give back to the local riders that have supported Showcase Snowboards over the past 20 years and to build a super fun course with the support of Brad Broughton, Showcase Team Manager, the Whistler Blackcomb Terrain Park team and their world class groomers," said Graham Turner, founder of Showcase Snowboards.

The prize purse is $5,000, as well as items like luggage from Dakine, swag from Sandbox and a Samsung LCD television for the rider who lands the best trick.

The entry is wide open to the snowboarding public. A $60 entry includes a souvenir bib, the Vans Waffle Breakfast, a Forum Chili Dog and beverage at the event and a ticket to the Showcase VIP 20 year anniversary party at the GLC, hosted by Thirty-Two. You have to be 19 or older to attend the party.

The entry fee doesn't include the cost of a lift ticket.

Sponsors for the event include Burton, Forum, Vans, Quicksilver, Ride, Bonfire, Dakine, Thirty Two, Samsung and Sandbox, with some additional partnership from Red Bull, Jager, Kokanee, Zero Ceiling, the GLC, Camp of Champions and Nintendo.

You can register in person at Showcase Snowboards or Guest Relations, or by calling 1-800-766-0449.
