Skiers, boarders aim high in slopestyle 

The second of four Nike Snowboard Series Slopestyle events went off on March 10, a mix of the valley’s best snowboarders and some impressive new school skiers.

In the amateur men skier’s 15 and Under competition, Whistler’s Kye Petersen won the day by four points over Austin Ross and five points on Mike Klinkhamer of Pemberton. The 16 and Over category belonged to Simon Lavigne of Quebec. Locals Dana Flahr and Jason Johnston were second and third.

In the 12 and Under Snowboarders, Matt Cathers of the Whistler Valley Snowboard Club edged out Jack Lundin of Team Wiggletooth and WVSC teammate Dan Barker. Vinny Ligeti, who has won gold in every Nike Series event he has participated in this season, had to settle for fourth.

In the Amateur Women Snowboarding 13 to 17 age group, Sarah Kopinya of the WVSC beat out Jocelyn Carthy of Surrey and local Jennifer Inniger by almost five points. In the men’s cateogy it was Rob Hole of Vancouver, followed by Aaron Shapiro and Graeme Barker of White Rock.

In the Amateur women’s 18 and Over field, Ando Hiromi of Whistler and Judy Swens of Sechelt finished first and second in a close contest. The men’s contest went to Lee Karlovic, followed by Tatsuya Miyazaki and Seiji Katsushima.

The top Pro women were Pilar Peterson and Yuko Naruse of Whistler. In the Pro men’s category, local Mike Osachuk finished first out of 22 competitors. Mike Prizeman of Langley and Whistler’s Jesse Carelli were second and third.

The next Nike Series slopestyle event will take place on March 24, followed by a halfpipe on Whistler on May 5 and a Slopestyle on May 6. All remaining events are open to both skiers and boarders.
