Snowboarder vying for chip award

National contest has Sea to Sky resident against three others across Canada

SPUD SPINNER Jill Munro is up against three others across Canada in a potato chip flavour contest with $50,000 and future royalties on the line.

Across the country, votes are being cast in a national potato chip war and a Sea to Sky resident is on the battlefield. Jill Munro is the mastermind behind one of the chip flavours in the Do Us a Flavour chip event currently happening from coast to coast.

Chipmaker Lay's wants to know which of four new flavours dreamed up by Canadians is most liked by chip eaters from Victoria to Cape Spear.

Munro's flavour is Creamy Garlic Caesar and her chip is up against Grilled Cheese and Ketchup, Maple Moose and Perogy Platter.

According to the folks at Lay's, Munro's Creamy Garlic Caesar chip features hints of croutons and Parmesan cheese in a crunchy chip.

Compare that to Tyler LeFrense of Newfoundland who dreamed up a maple syrup chip called Maple Moose.

Maple syrup on a potato chip? Only in Newfoundland and Quebec, and with chip fans under the age of seven.

More palatable for most is Lucas Crawford's Perogy Platter from Alberta. This chip features sweet onions and smoky bacon flavouring.

Angela Batley of Ontario dreamed up Grilled Cheese and Ketchup.

Lay's hired Martin Short as the campaign spokesperson and advertised across the country encouraging potato chip fans to vote for their favourite flavour. The winner will get $50,000 plus one per cent of the future sales after the winning flavour goes into full production.

"The decision of what will be the next great potato chip flavour is in the hands of Canadians," Short says through a Lay's news release. "I'm asking all Canadians to fulfill their chip flavour electoral duty and vote daily at www.lays.ca/flavour or text "VOTE" to 101010 by Oct. 16. Be an informed voter."

This contest started in February when Lay's put the call out for flavour ideas from Canadians.

Munro was recovering with a broken back after a snowboarder crashed into her on Whistler Mountain in February of 2012 when Short called for flavour entries. Munro entered more than 10 flavour ideas. She wasn't alone, as more than 600,000 flavour ideas were submitted to the chipmaker. The four final flavours were announced in July. The winner will be announced in November and the chip with the most votes will be available for purchase alongside Lay's other flavours like Salt and Vinegar, Roast Chicken, Ketchup and Classic.

With just a few days of voting left Munro thinks, based on likes posted to Facebook, that her flavour is running in second place behind Maple Moose.

"Texting is the easiest way to vote," Munro says. "I love that."

She'll love it even more if Creamy Garlic Caesar picks up enough contest votes to bring her $50,000.
