Snowmobile big air draws a crowd

After two years of remote contests in the Brandywine Bowl and Brohm Ridge respectively, the World Freestyle Snowmobile Competition was loving its new home at the Pemberton Stock Car Association track.

After two years of remote contests in the Brandywine Bowl and Brohm Ridge respectively, the World Freestyle Snowmobile Competition was loving its new home at the Pemberton Stock Car Association track.

According to event organizer Linda Stang, the event attracted almost 1,400 people, which is an increase of more than 1,000 from previous years.

The eight snowmobilers that turned out to compete – B.J. Murray bowed out to take part in a Disney movie production and Cory Derpak was injured – pulled out their best tricks over the table top, launching off a ramp provided by the Slednecks series, and landing in a mix of snow, hay and dirt.

The winner, for the second time in three years, was Whistler’s Jason Fentiman with some stylish heel clickers. The win netted him $800 in free parts and labour from event sponsor Mountain Motors, a trophy, and assorted other prizes.

Jason Poole of Vancouver finished second, and Cody Borsches of Calgary finished in third place.

Whistler’s Chris Dimma came close, finishing in fourth.

Side entertainment was provided by motocross riders Kris Gawasiuk and Mike Samson of Kamloops and Mark and Craig Philipps of Calgary.

Stang says she is already planning next year’s event. Now that the venue and logistics have been worked out, she says it should run a lot smoother in the future.

"This was a great venue," said Stang. "I realize that my original plan to hold this in Whistler wouldn’t have worked as well, because there’s just not enough space, and it’s pretty loud. It wouldn’t have been a good fit with the ski crowd."

Entertainment was provided by the Whistler Dance Academy, fire dancers, fireworks, and Whistler DJ Mat the Alien.
