Over the last weekend of August, local juniors took part in the first Sea to Sky Juniors Golf Championship. Participants aged 10 to 18 played rounds at The Meadows in Pemberton, Nicklaus North in Whistler and the Squamish Valley Golf Course, while keeping a running score through all three events. No handicaps were applied.

On the girls’ side, Stephanie Sykora finished with 268 strokes, or just over 89.3 strokes per round, followed by Amanda Woida with 275 and Rebecca Flynn with 277.

In Boys 10 to 14, Cole McDonald posted the low gross of 251, averaging a very respectable 83.6 strokes per round. He was followed by Kevin Kerr with a 262 and Mark McChesney with a 270.

In Boys 15 to 18, Ethan Fairley finished with a 238, or an average of 79.3 shots per round. That’s about 22 bogeys in 54 holes of golf.

In second was Casey Svejkovsky with a 255, followed by Johann Peterson with a 261.

Organizers were impressed by the turnout and the level of play, and are planning to bring the tournament back next year. The cost was $100 per golfer, which included three rounds of golf, dinner after each round, and prizes.

Charlie Maxwell of the Squamish Valley Golf Club was the sponsoring pro for the event.
