Volleyball team repeats Tier II championships title
The Whistler Whoosh Women’s Volleyball team rallied from a disappointing showing in pool play to advance to the semi-finals in third place. They then proceeded to beat Vancouver’s Shadow and the Ichiban Killers in two straight games each to win the Tier II championship title for the third time in four years.
The team includes Olga Achiardi, Melanie Bernier, Carlee Howell, M.C. Lajoie, Mairi Smith, Veronica Voracek, Christine Dandy, Nicole Graham, and Rebecca McKinney. Bill Sirota once again coached the team.
The team would like to thank Merlin’s and La Bocca for their sponsorship this year.

XCX confirmed for 2007 TWSSF
For the first time ever the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival will be featuring a Nordic skiing race, the Cross Country Cross, or XCX. The date for the event is April 15, following the outdoor concert featuring K’Naan and Stephen Marley.
The event combines Nordic skiing with skiercross, with four racers at a time making two loops of a course at the base of Whistler Mountain that includes rollers and berms on the downhill section, and a short but steep climbing section.
Racers will be seeded after an uphill sprint, and the sprint will be repeated in the opening of every round of racing. Prizes are $1,000 for the top male and $500 for the top female.
The overall winners will be crowned Nordic Gladiators, surviving over half a kilometre of hill sprints, and six laps of the course.
Registration is online at www.whistler2007.com .
WORCA bike swap returns April 21
Spring is here, the snow is thawing, and thousands of locals are getting ready for bike season. Whether you have a bike or other gear to sell, or are in the market for a set of wheels, the place to go is WORCA’s annual bike swap.
This year the swap will take place on April 21, once again in the square outside of Dusty’s in Whistler Creek. The cost is $2 to sell your bike or any other items, as well as 15 per cent of any purchases under $1,000 and 10 per cent of any purchases $1,000 and over. All proceeds from the volunteer sale will go to the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association’s youth programs.
Last year more than $76,000 in bikes and gear was sold, raising $9,170 for youth Loonie rides, subsidized clinics, and other youth programs. This year WORCA will be offering more camps and clinics, and additional support to the Whistler Secondary team.
Times will be announced in the next few weeks. Visit www.worca.com for details.
