Spots still open for Showcase Showdown

Amateurs compete in rail jam on Saturday, pros on Sunday

If you’ve been up Whistler Mountain the past week you probably noticed the large mound of snow at the base of Headwall. This weekend that mound will host the Monster Jib Box Pro-Am event, the last but not the least of Whistler’s snowboard events.

The contest is open to anybody, with amateur and pro categories, and a prize purse to be determined by the number of entries this year. Juniors can compete, but there is no separate category.

After three years of quarterpipe contests the organizers decided to change things up this year with a jam on rails and boxes, which means athletes get to hit the obstacles as many times as they want in a given time frame, working towards that perfect grind.

All of the pre-registered athletes will be able to session the rails on Friday (May 21), and the competition starts on Saturday with the amateur category. The pro riders will compete on Sunday.

You can pick up registration forms at Showcase Snowboards or Westbeach, or sign up on the day of the event on the lower level of the Roundhouse Lodge before 10 a.m. Bib pickup will also be available.

The cost is $50 for amateur and $80 for pros, which includes giveaways, draw prizes and prizes for the top riders. Helmets are mandatory and mouthguards are strongly recommended.

The amateur men will go first, jamming on the rails from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The second heat will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The amateur women will ride from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., after which point the area will be opened up to the pros for training.

The pro men’s qualifier starts on Sunday10:15 a.m. and runs until 11:30 a.m. The second qualifier runs from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The pro women’s qualifier is from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m., to be followed by an open jam session for all the finalists between 2 and 3 p.m. The awards will take place at the GLC at 5:30 p.m.
