Squamish's first Night Market in the Park, an open-air community market selling food, handmade and vintage goods, takes place downtown on Friday, Aug. 16.

Part of the Downtown Squamish Summer Series, the aim is to draw residents and visitors to sample and explore the products of 20 vendors at Stan Clarke Park, where the market will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

There will be live music and market-goers are encouraged to pull up a blanket in the park and have a picnic and enjoy the late summer sunshine. The market will offer face painting, games and a vintage photo booth. Admission is free.

Mayor Rob Kirkham said in a release the District of Squamish looked forward to building the series "into something really meaningful."

"Downtown summer programming was determined to be a 'quick win' to help kick start the Council's Downtown Transformation initiative, providing additional reasons to bring people to the area, and adding vibrancy especially in the evenings," he added

A second free event is also confirmed; Cinema Under the Stars showing the Steven Spielberg classic E.T. on Aug. 29 at 8:30 p.m. in Pavilion Park.
