More than 230 kids swam, cycled and ran their way through the Squamish Triathlon.
The sell out field of boys and girls did an indoor swim then hopped onto bicycles for a ride in the sunshine in warm May temperatures between 25 and 27 Celsius on Sunday, May 13.
The race organizers awarded 15-year-old Callista Ryan with a week at summer camp donated by Camp Summit.
Race Director Mike Hedberg said the prize was for someone who demonstrates community service and volunteerism.
“For this year, we have chosen a girl who participated in our event in the part and shows great community spirit and leadership,” Hedberg said before announcing the name of the award recipient.
Last year’s race director, Roz Gilbert, was also awarded with a camp stay. In honour of Mother’s Day, Gilbert was given a Weekend Women’s Camp for the many years she has been involved with the youth triathlon.
“This year, the winner is someone who volunteers at our race every year and whose three kids have done this event since the beginning as well as many other triathlons around the province,” said Hedberg.
The most competitive athletes of the day were the girls and boys in the 12 and 13 age group.
Josiah Ney of Langley topped the male 12 to 13 group with a time of 39 minutes and 35 seconds and he was followed 21 seconds later by Eli Chappell of Squamish. Jack Cormack of Squamish placed third in the age group with a time of 44:04.
Only eight seconds separated the top three girls in the 12 to 13 category. Isobelle Williston of Squamish placed third, Mikayla Lorimer of Squamish placed second and Autumn Cramb of Squamish won the age group with a time of 49:45.
Michael Milic of Delta topped the 14 and 15 age group with a time of 41:31 and by Oli Jarrett of Squamish followed him ten minutes later. Callista Ryan was the only girl in the oldest age group.
Another youth triathlon is set for Saturday, May 26 in Whistler. The Whistler Triathlon is also open to a limited number of adults.
