The annual Strut Your Stuff fall registration fair is taking place Saturday, Sept. 12, with dozens of community sports, arts and recreation groups setting up booths at Myrtle Philip Community Centre to register kids for the upcoming year. Groups ranging from gymnastics to hockey to martial arts to dance host tables at the event, allowing parents to handle all their kids' registration in one place at one time, as well as to ask questions and learn about different programs.

Families can also apply for Kidsport grants to help with the cost of enrolling their kids in approved sports, recreation and arts programs that meet Kidsport criteria. Grants of up to $300 are available per year for kids aged five to 18 and must go towards participant and registration fees.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all community groups serving youth are invited to reserve tables. To reserve a table contact the Resort Municipality of Whistler at 604-935-8350 and indicate course #13236. For more information contact Sheila Mozes at 604-905-9393 or Stephanie at 604-902-1433.

All Star Wrestling rebounds into Squamish

Back by popular demand, All Star Wrestling is returning to Squamish with "Sea to Sky Mayhem" - five wrestling matches taking place at Totem Hall on Friday, Sept. 18.

The event opens with All Star Wrestling alumni Big Bad Chad and The Mighty Iton, followed by a bout between The Panama Wasp and "Mayor" Austin Spencer. Spencer, if you're a fan, is the only B.C. wrestler ever to train at the World Wrestling Entertainment facility in Florida.

The Grudge Match portion of the evening features "Golden Lion" Gurv Sihra versus "The Ideal Reflection" Christopher Ryseck, both of whom have a chance at a title shot depending on the outcome of the battle. Ryseck is based out of Tacoma, and was just featured on the MTV show Made.

Next up is the PWA B.C. Championship heavyweight match featuring "Prince Of Power" Lak Siddartha, the reigning champion, versus Johnny Obsession.

The Main Event is a tag team championship scheduled for two of three falls. Collin Cutler and Adam Fedyk (The Kelownafornians), who won their tag team titles in August, will go up against Seth Knight and The Great Kasaki, the previous champions.

Tickets are $15 for the front row, and general admission is $12. Kids under 12 are $10.

You can pick up your tickets in advance at Billie's Bouquet on Cleveland Avenue or at Totem Hall, or at the door at 7:15 p.m. on fight night.

$100K for Squamish mountain bike trails

The provincial and federal governments recognized Squamish's contribution to mountain bike tourism and recreation last week with the announcement of $100,000 in new funding to support new trail development and upgrades to existing trails in the Diamond Head area.

The province committed $50,000 in infrastructure funds to the project, which the Squamish Off Road Cycling Association used to qualify for matching funds under the federal National Trails Coalition's cost-sharing program.

Work on the trails is expected to begin this month, with SORCA developing a new A-Line-style, machine-built downhill trail, as well as upgrading existing trails in the area.

Member of Parliament John Weston and B.C. tourism, culture and arts minister Kevin Krueger presented the funds on Sept. 2 and SORCA followed up by posting an open call for contractors.

Young riders featured at Green River motocross

This Saturday and Sunday the Green River Riding Club is hosting a CMRC fall series motocross race, potentially drawing hundreds of other racers from around the province.

Races take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and each rider will race twice a day.

A group of young local racers is mixing it up at a higher level these days, including Seb and Wyatt Fellows, Malcolm Watson and Dawson Amann, who recently placed fifth in the provincial championships. Squamish pro racer Justin Patjas will also be racing in the most competitive class, after posting top-20 results nationwide in the 450 cc group at the age of 16.

The Pemberton race is the third in the CMRC series, with two more races in Williams Lake and Kamloops.

Admission is just $5 and kids are free. There is ample parking on the site, as well as a concession.

The Green River Riding Club is located just south of Pemberton on the east side of the highway.

Soccer teams on top

The final weekends before the start of the school year were packed with soccer tournaments, and Whistler players had their hands full.

In Chilliwack Aug. 29-30 the Squamish Football Club Under-18 boys placed first in a pre-season tournament, outscoring their opponents 11 to 3 in four games. Five players from Whistler and Pemberton played with the team and scored seven of the goals.

The team lost its first game against Guildford Arsenal 2-1, but answered back with a 2-0 win over a team from the Sunshine Coast. On the second day they faced Guildford again and came away with the win by a 3-1 margin, with Will Robson and Harrison Shrimpton of Whistler each potting a goal and Hans Schranz of Pemberton netting a corner kick from Squamish standout Chad Pereira.

They faced the Sunshine Coast team a second time, but with the prospect of a tie they had to score at least three goals while allowing fewer than three goals against them. Squamish FC was up 1-0 after the first half, then added two more goals in the second half to take the tournament.

The team was back in action this past weekend at a tournament in Burnaby where they finished second. They won games against Richmond and Dunbar with Will Robson and Hans Schranz scoring five goals, but they lost games to Coquitlam and Delta. The regular season in the Lower Mainland starts this weekend, with Squamish fielding a team in the competitive Under 18 league.

Also in action this past weekend were the Pemberton Timberwolves travelling teams, which played a tournament in Maple Ridge.

The Girls team won gold with four shutouts and 17 goals against teams from Port Coquitlam, North Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows and Burnaby. Kitty Norman scored a hat trick in the Timberwolves final game against North Coquitlam. The team also included Anne Linklater, Bronwyn Green, Charley Field, Deseree and Sierra Townley, Emma Chasey, Hailey and Ashley LeBlanc, Jenna Wilkins, Joanna Read, Lucy Hawksbee, Mia and Maddy Kerr and Mariah Hayward.

The boys team was on a similar path, winning their first three games against Port Coquitlam, Port Moody Diablos and Port Moody United with 18 goals for and just four against. They found themselves behind 3-0 against Abbotsford in the final, and couldn't come back despite a rally.

The team included Anthony Baradel, Brodie Hauser, Cain Coulson, Christopher Reid, Eldon and Wesley Fink, Jacob Field, Keaton Gibson, Liam Falloon, Logan and Dalton Pehota, Matthew Denduyf, Simon and Todd Walsh, and Tristan Curtis.

Katmandu backs Jamaican luge hopeful

There are a lot of reasons why it makes sense for Katmandu Bike and Board to support a Jamaican skeleton athlete, which should be obvious to anyone who's ever been in the store.

Russ Long at Katmandu is selling Jamaican Skeleton T-shits (which promise to be a hot piece of unofficial 2010 memorabilia), while using the proceeds to support Rindy Louks - a female athlete hoping to represent Jamaica in skeleton at the Games.

Eric Cottrell of Thinkwell Designs came up with the design for the shirt at the request of Louks, and so far Katmandu is the only store carrying them.

Lululemon hosts Tri Lu-Lu

Whistler's Lululemon Athletica store is hosting a laid back triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 19 featuring a 30-minute spin at The Core, followed by a 30-minute run on Lost Lake Trails. The third event is a 30-minute Yoga session in Rebagliati Park.

The event is free, and gets underway at the store at 8:45 a.m.
