A total of 42,143 runners took part in the 10 kilometre 2002 Vancouver Sun Run, including a number of runners from the Sea to Sky Corridor.
For the most part the race was a solid column of white shirts, but near the front a number of runners managed to break away from the pack.
Kenya’s James Koskie won the men’s division for the third year in a row, the first competitor to accomplish this feat. His time of 27 minutes, 58 seconds put him ahead of three other Kenyan runners, Moses Macharia, Stephenson Myanu and Stephen Ariga. In fifth place, and the top Canadian for the second year in a row was Ottawa’s Sean Kaley with a time of 28:44.
In the women’s race, Sara Dillabough of Ottawa claimed the title in 33:17. Lucy Smith and Carolyn Murray, both of Victoria, were second and third.
There were dozens of locals in the race, but the outstanding time belonged to Mae Palm, who won the women’s 60 to 64 division with a time of 47:36.
Patty Ritchie of Whistler was fourth in the women’s 55 to 59 race with a time of 48:35.
In the men’s 16 to 18 race, Morgan Titus was second in 32:08. He was also 33 rd overall among the men.
Cam McCullough was eighth in the men’s 55 to 59 race with a time of 42:14.
