Who: The Floor
What: The Punk Night
Where: Boot Pub
When: Sunday, Aug. 22
Im going to come right out and say it: Im related to the bass player of Edmonton post-punk band The Floor.
Hes my younger brother Paul and one of my favourite people in the entire world. So if youre looking for an objective article on the band, you might want to check out some of the other press that can be accessed on their Web site.
That being said, if the band sucked I would not be admitting the connection. I would hide until they passed through town and deny any relation. But I wont do that. Rather, Im going to encourage everyone I know to check them out. Take from that what you will.
Together now for two years, The Floor has developed a spare and achingly beautiful sound drawing on the early 80s sounds of The Cure, Joy Division and pre-Joshua Tree U2.
Lead singer Matt Pahls vocals channel the cold war era angst of his forebearers into a modern political context. The result breaks my heart every time in the best possible way.
A bonus of having sound engineer Graham Lessard on keyboards is the ability to turn out tight, independent EPs such as Autonomy Off/On, which has drawn raves from scenesters in California and continues to occupy campus radio playlists across the country.
Well established in their home province of Alberta, the band had a career highpoint this past April when they were chosen to open for indie-rock legends The Pixies on their Edmonton stop.
On this side of the Rockies, The Floor are regular guests of Vancouvers Radio Berlin, but this Sundays show will be their first time playing Whistler.
The Floor will be kicking off The Punk Night at the Boot Pub this Sunday night, a little post punk action before the firestorm of Ontario hardcore bands A Day and A Deathwish and Rosesdead, currently on a cross-country tour together.
