BARBECUE BY THE LAKE

Hostelling International and the Whistler Hostel host their annual barbecue and open house on Saturday, Aug. 10. Afternoon includes BBQ games and water sports for families and friends. Drop by between 1 and 5 p.m. at 5678 Alta Lake Road. Call 604-932-5492 for information.

WEETAMA

Join in the celebrations of the rich traditions and culture of the region’s Aboriginal community over seven days from Aug. 12 to 18. There will be free outdoor programs, artisan workshops and special ceremonies. Tickets are available for a traditional feast on Aug. 16 for $79.95 as well as a blues concert with George Leach on Aug. 17 for $15. For information call 604-932-2394.

BEAR SMART PRESENTATIONS

Tony Boschmann, bear/human conflict specialist unravels the mysteries of bear behaviour: beyond the fear. Are your fears based on myth or reality? Millennium Place on Aug. 14, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Presentations focussing on various aspects of bear biology & ecology, bear behaviour, living with bears in your backyard, and safety in bear country are held every Wednesday night 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Millennium Place. BONEYARD WARS II

Teams from Whistler and Blackcomb face off in a test of engineering and resourcefulness. Technicians, tradesmen and engineers use scrap material and machinery to build machines. See the results Aug. 15 at the village base of Whistler Mountain. Post demonstration party at the GLC.

RCMP GARAGE SALE

Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the RCMP detachment. Great bargains and delicious baked goods. Items in good condition are also needed for sale. Donations of household items, toys, sporting goods and clothing are welcome and can be dropped off at the detachment until the date of the sale. All proceeds will go to the Dandelion Daycare Society.

CANCER FRIENDS BARBECUE

GRIZZLY & BLACK BEAR PRESENTATION

Stephen Herrero, renowned grizzly and black bear biologist from the University of Alberta, will speak at Millennium Place on Wednesday, Aug. 28. This is a joint presentation with the Whistler Naturalists and the JJ Whistler Bear Society. Herrero is the first speaker in a monthly series for the Whistler Naturalists during the 2002-2003 season.
