Cheese rolling debuts on Saturday

It’s being billed as “the world’s most eccentric, hilarious race,” and anybody who enjoys the sight of people cartwheeling down hills in hot pursuit of rolling wheels of cheese can probably agree.

The inaugural running of the Canadian Cheese Rolling Championships takes place Saturday, Aug. 16. At stake are two impressive wheels of cheese from the Natural Pastures Cheese Company of Vancouver Island, one each for the top male and female, as well as their choice of two adult passes or a family pass to Whistler-Blackcomb.

The event gets underway at noon and will run to 4 p.m. Other side events include the kid’s uphill race and cheese bowling, as well as a sampling area where you can try Canada’s best cheeses.

Comedian Sean Cullen will emcee the event.

You can sign up on the day of the event from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the base of Whistler Mountain, or register in advance at www.canadiancheeserolling.ca and get a hat. The event takes place at the base of Blackcomb Mountain.

Team Whistler holding criterium races in Olympic Park

Team Whistler is hosting an inaugural criterium race on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Whistler Olympic Park. There will be four types of races, three of them taking place on the paved trails in the park.

The Bear **It Crit is a regular criterium where the fastest Category 1 and 2 riders will ride for one hour plus two laps to determine the winner.

The Devil Take the Hind Man race is an elimination race, as riders at the back are eliminated after a certain number of laps until only a few sprinters remain up front to race for the finish.

The Bear Pooh Points Race is a points race where riders get points for their positioning after a certain number of laps. The racers with the most points at the end of the short race win.

Organizers are also planning a fat tire criterium, which will take place off-road.

More information is available online at www.teamwhistler.ca, and registration is at www.karelo.com.

Routley rules K-Town Classic, Time Trial champs

It’s not often that Tony Routley and son Will get to race together since Will switched from mountain biking to road biking, but the Aug. 2-3 K-Town Classic in Kelowna was an exception. The K-Town Classic was a stage race, as well as the seventh event in the Road B.C. Cup series sanctioned by Cycling B.C., and included a criterium, road race, and hill climb.

Will Routley won the Category 1/2 omnium title after placing first on the road ride, first on the hill climb (setting a new record), and 15 th in the criterium.

Tony Routley placed fifth overall in the Masters 40-plus category with an eighth place finish in the hill climb, a seventh place finish in the criterium, and a finish with the top group in the road race.

On Aug. 9, Will went on to win the B.C. Time Trial Championships in Squamish, completing the 36.5 km course in 46 minutes and 24 seconds, well over a minute faster than the next competitor. He averaged 47.2 km/h on the course.

Other Whistler athletes in the competition include Ben Chaddock in 18 th overall.
