Only a few years ago the Whistler Gymnastics Club didn't have a trampoline team, but with the help of coach Louise Stack and some talented jumpers they're more than making up for lost time.
This past weekend the team headed to the Western Canadian Championships in Port Moody, competing against clubs from B.C. to Manitoba.
Leading the club, Sydney Lovell-Schmidt won her first medal ever as she and teammate Caitlin MacConnachie joined forces to place third in Level 2 synchro.
MacConnachie also placed third in tumbling and trampoline categories for the club, the top result overall for Whistler Gymnastics.
Joe Davies was sitting first in double mini tramp heading into the finals, but had an unstable landing in the last round to drop to fifth in that category. However, he also placed fourth in trampoline and third in Syncho.
Jamie Gormely was sixth on double mini, seventh in tumbling and seventh in syncho with teammate Keeley Wentzel.
Wentzel, who was a member of Team BC in tumbling, posted lower scores than usual after going too far on her first pass to place seventh overall. Disappointed and with no chance of making the finals she returned to Whistler on Saturday afternoon, only to find out on Sunday that she had qualified to represent Team BC in trampoline and in tumbling — but missed both opportunities because she didn't get back in time.
Miscommunication aside, coach Louise Stack said the team is excited by its results.
"On a positive note, our team is very inspired," she wrote. "We now have four or five Level 4 potentials for next season and a very driven parental support team that will be working to do big things for our tramp program after seeing the progress this year."
This Sunday, June 16, the Whistler Gymnastics Club is hosting its annual year-end show at the Oros Whistler Gymnastics Centre, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
For the Record
In last week's coverage of the Ogopogo Invitational in Kelowna, one athlete was missed. Caitlin MacConnachie moved up to the extremely competitive Level 3 Provincial category this year, and finished 11th all around out of 28 competitors.
