The Windermere Whistler Extreme women’s volleyball team is travelling to Vancouver this weekend to participate in the Forefront Fiesta tournament in preparation for the Tier II Provincial Championships March 16-17.

Although the team is only in its second year and is training without coaches, the recent addition of several strong players has helped the Whistler Extreme to post some impressive results. At two previous British Columbia Volleyball Association tournaments in the Lower Mainland, the Whistler Extreme finished in third place both times.

Jodi Rutten, who played for Mt. Royal College in Alberta, joins Wanda Klovance in blocking, bumping and attacking from the middle positions. Veterans Laura Wetaski and Jan Budge, along with newcomers Shelly Ledingham, Sue Eckersley and Erica Swanstrom are the team’s power hitters. Georgina Titus and Lisa Mason are the right side hitters.

Carlee Howell, who played for the University of Victoria, and University of Calgary alumni Jennifer Johnson are the team’s setters.

It hasn’t been an easy season. The team has had a few injuries, and missed out on a few tournaments because of snowfalls and poor driving conditions.

Nevertheless the Whistler Extreme is confident that they can do well at the provincials.
