Whistler's Chelsey Walker has been nominated for a prestigious YWCA's Women of Distinction Award.
"It is exciting," she said of the award, which honours women whose outstanding achievements contribute to the well-being and future in a community.
As the executive director of the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program Society, Walker has been nominated in the Health and Active Living Category.
While admitting that every organization needs a champion, Walker turned aside questions about how she took WASP from an infant organization to a world-renowned centre for learning and sports excellence for those with disabilities.
"This says a lot about what has happened with Whistler Adaptive and the amount of growth we have seen from 2005 when I joined to today," said Walker.
"There is always a champion and there are so many great organizations in Whistler. This just goes to show they are paying attention to what happens in Whistler and a lot of good things can come out a small community."
Awards are also given to honour businesses and organizations that support the wellness and diverse needs of their employees.
In addition to the ten original nomination categories, the nominees are also eligible for the Connecting the Community Award where they select a YWCA program area in which they are interested and use social media such as Twitter and Facebook to promote votes. From April 26 - May 27 the public can cast their votes for and the nominee with the most votes receives the Connecting the Community Award and Scotiabank will donate $10,000 to the YWCA program area of her choice.
Recipients will be announced on May 31, 2011 during an awards dinner at the Westin Bayshore. Tickets are available from YWCA Vancouver.
The 2011 Awards are presented by Scotiabank. Gold sponsors are BC Housing, BC Hydro, Envision Financial, Goldcorp Inc., Industrial Alliance Pacific, Port Metro Vancouver, TD Bank Group, Teck Resources Limited, Vancity and Vancouver Foundation.
