Weather no barrier for triathletes

Rain and cool temperatures couldn't put a damper on the Whistler Kids of Steel and Whistler Try-a-Tri triathlon on Saturday morning, with more than 60 kids and 50 adults taking part this year.

In 8- to 9-Year-Old Girls, Jennifer Lafreniere finished the 100 metre swim, 2 km bike and 1 km run in 18 minutes and 14 seconds, which was one second faster than Mila Wittenberg. Jaxon Slaney of Kelowna was third in 18:29, with J.J. Deane of Whistler and Linnea Uunila of Squamish rounding out the top five.

Micky Williston of Squamish was first in 8 to 9 Year Old Boys with a time of 18:31, with Ian Milley of Whistler placing second in 19:41 and Adam Kiimchuk-Brown of Squamish in third in 19:44. Eric Smith of Whistler and Wyatt Schnare of Surrey were fourth and fifth.

In 10-to-11 Year Old Girls, the top racer was Victoria's Hannah Henry in 17:43, followed by Sarah Fedder of Vancouver in 18:55 and Isobelle Williston of Squamish in 18:59. Fourth and fifth were Kyla Boersma and Skyler MacDonald of Vancouver, while the top Whistler racer was Aoife Gannon in 22:22.

In 10-to 11-Year-Old Boys, Eli Chappell, Nicholas Kiimchuk-Brown and Stuart Loop of Squamish were first through third, with times of 16:03, 17:09 and 17:43 respectively. Whistler's Fraser Doak was fourth, followed by Zachary Fedder.

In 12- to 13-Year-Old Girls, Kelty Slaney of Kelowa finished the 300 metre swim, 10 km bike and 3 km run in 45:34. Whistler's Gabrielle Smith was second in 57:06, followed by Melissa Robison of Lillooet in 59:22. Angela Barry-Wiens of Maple Ride and Steffi Denroche of Whistler were fourth and fifth.

In 12- to 13-Year-Old Boys, the win went to Whistler's Tyler Welsh in 42:23, followed by Max Elliott of Vancouver in 44:39. Taylor Derynck of Whistler was third in 44:59. George Wheeler of Whistler was fourth.

In 14- to 15-Year-Old Girls, the winner was Whistler's Lauren Doak in 46:06, followed by Deven Bane-Allen of Squamish in 51:20.

Alistair Ogden of Port Moody was first in 14 to 15 Year Old Boys in 48:35, followed by Dorian Leech of Lillooet in 52:33.

In the Try-a-Tri, all the athletes swam 300 metres, biked 14 km and ran 4 km.

Matt DesBrisay of Whistler was 13 th out of the pool but first on the bike and ninth in the run, and he placed first overall in 1:02:05. He was also first in the Men 30 to 34 category, followed by Daryl West in 1:08:04 and Brian Kaye of Langley in 1:04:09.

Shelley Gunn of Lillooet was second overall and first among women with her time of 1:02:50. She also placed first in the Female 45 to 49 race, followed by Janet Staney of Kelowna in 1:07:12 and Allison Clarke in 1:31:24.

Alexis Walhovd of Whistler was third overall and the second woman in 1:03:24, with the fastest swim of the day. She was first in Female 25 to 29, followed by Bryn Reade-Slater of Squamish in 1:05:45 and Lindsay Burak of Vancouver in 1:07:29.

Bruce Benedict of Nanaimo was the second male and fourth overall in 1:03:43, as well as first in the Male 45 to 49 race, followed by Martine Norris of Victoria in 1:17:21.

Meanwhile, Brian Kaye was the third-fastest male racer, placing fifth overall in 1:04:09, while topping the Male 35 to 39 category. He was followed by Gabriel Quelmano of Squamish in 1:09:29 .

The third-fastest female racer was Shelley DesBrisay of Whistler in 1:05:30, topping the Female 35 to 39 category. She was followed in that category by Kristi Hirsh of Whistler in 1:06:46 and Cindy Lister of Victoria in 1:08:55.

Other age group winners in the top 20 include Chloe Thomas of Whistler in Female 20 to 24 in 1:05:54, Joan Paterson of Whistler in Female 40 to 44 in 1:07:06, Jackie Dickinson of Whistler in Female 30 to 34 in 1:07:34 and Ronald Adoph of Lillooet in Male 40 to 44 in 1:10:36.
