Beginner road riders looking to get involved in the Whistler Cycling Club can do so beginning May 6.

The club is introducing Wednesday night rides over flat or rolling terrain to help riders who find the flagship Tuesday night rides a little bit long or intimidating.

The Wednesday night rides will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Whistler Village Sports and will last for 60 to 90 minutes.

Brenda Baker, along with Kelly Blunden, will help organize the rides.

"The Wednesday evening rides are for anyone who enjoys road riding in a social, low-intensity manner," Baker said in a release. "Feedback from participants last year indicated this type of ride would attract new cyclists, who we want to encourage to come out and enjoy the fun and fitness benefits of cycling."

For insurance purposes, interested riders must join the club, at a cost of $30, before their second ride.

Training run for BarnBurner Triple on Saturday

Those interested in running this summer's newest race, the BarnBurner Triple in Pemberton, can get a leg up on the competition.

Race director Christine Cogger said the training run will take place this Saturday (April 18) at 9 a.m. Participants will run the first two loops of the course, which is about 14 km, to get a sense of trail running and what to expect the day of the race.

The run will begin at the community barn in Pemberton. There is no charge to participate, though those interested in participating are asked to RSVP on Facebook to the Loop 1 & 2 Orientation Run event (www.facebook.com/events/1566846800229725/).

The BarnBurner Triple is set for June 20. Those looking for more information, or to register, can visit www.barnburnertriple.com.

Gymnasts set personal bests at provincials

Whistler Gymnastics was shut out of the medals at the provincial championships at Capilano University in North Vancouver from April 10 to 12.

Still, head coach Karin Jarratt noted several gymnasts posted personal best results and should hold their heads high. Nine athletes attended the event, which was for gymnasts in Level 5 or higher, tying a club record.

Leading the charge was Katie Faerge, who was eighth all-around in the Level 6 (2002) category. She was powered by a fifth-place showing on the vault and a sixth-place result on the bars. In the same category, Ayva Spierings was 21st all around, led by an 11th place in the vault.

In the Level 8 (2002-2004) division, Ella Crawford also notched an eighth-place all-around result, finishing sixth in the beam and ninth on the floor.

In Level 5 (2005-2007), Téa Cousineau was 16th overall while Annie Sproule was 19th.

In Level 5 (1999-2004), Katelyn Garcia placed 21st while Kaiya Nixon was 22nd.

Lastly, in Level 6 (2005-2007), Addie Crawford was 22nd overall, while placing fourth in the beam and ninth on the vault, and in Level 6 (2004), Nicole Bolleman was 18th overall, including placing 10th in the beam.

Whistler Gymnastics will next see action this weekend as part of the Bowen Island Invitational.
