Several community service programs got a helping hand recently with big donations from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and the American Friends of Whistler.
Whistler Community Services will be using the $5,000 from the WB Foundation for its food bank and to upgrade the Community Greenhouses.
AFW donated $8,000. That money will also be used for the food bank and to help fund the WCSS’s Counselling Assistance Program.
WCSS's Food Bank provides assists to over 1,200 adults and children in need annually in Whistler. It is a crucial service in the off-seasons when many families and individuals need a helping hand to make it to the next busy tourist season.
The Counselling Assistance Program provides financially restricted Whistler community members with bursaries of up to $50/hour toward private counsellor's fees. Every year well over 50 Whistler residents receive much needed counselling assistance at significantly reduced rates, thanks to the program.
The Community Greenhouse Project, started in 2004, now enables more than 50 Whistlerites to rent a garden box to grow their own organic vegetables for the season. Donations of fresh organic produce are made regularly to the food bank. The program looks to expand with a new greenhouse in the spring of 2006.
