Whistler FC repeats league championship

Summer soccer league waiting for fields to open

The Whistler Football Club wrapped up another winning season last week with a 3-1 victory over the Rangers in the Squamish Men’s Soccer League.

The league got underway in the fall with a six week break from mid-December to February, finishing with the finals last weekend. The Whistler FC lost just two of 21 regular season games to finish on top of the league, then went undefeated in three rounds of playoffs to win the title for another year.

"This year was really good," said Shawn Hughes, WFC’s team co-ordinator. "There were no suspensions, it was a really clean league, and a lot of talent turned out to bulk up the league – it was definitely a harder league than in years past. We didn’t see the blow-outs we saw last year, we had to work a lot harder to win. I think next year is going to be even better."

Hughes is also the co-ordinator/organizer for the Whistler Summer Soccer League, which will kick off its 12 week season on June 15. The league will host drop-in nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays once the fields are open, and teams will recruit from the drop-in.

There should be six co-ed teams again this year, although there could be more teams added if the interest level is high.

The Whistler FC, which is becoming the rep team for the league, is also hosting an international soccer tournament at the end of summer, on top of attending three or four tournaments and playing exhibition games against Vancouver teams. Whistler FC is currently sponsored by Earl’s, Garfinkel’s and Corona Excavations.
