Whistler female freeskiers raise money for breast cancer

12-month ski calendar available in stores, online this week

It started during a skiing session at Golden, B.C.

The way Whistler-based freeskier Sarah Frood put it, a few years ago, she was navigating the slopes with some of her professional ski friends when they began talking about ways to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

They came up with the idea of Rad Boob: a 12-month women's ski calendar they could sell, with all proceeds going directly to a registered charity called Rethink Breast Cancer.

Now, several years later, their brainchild has become a reality.

"Everything was volunteer," said Frood about the calendar, which hit Whistler's stores this week.

"We asked the girls to donate photos, so they talked to the photographers they worked with, and they were all willing to donate photos, which is amazing."

The calendar features many top skiers, including Whistler Blackcomb's own Tessa Treadway, Frood, and Holly Walker. Other featured skiers are: Karolina Ekman, Lynsey Dyer, Grete Eliassen, Izzy Lynch, Ingrid Backstrom, Janina Kuzma, Marie-Claude Larivee, and Kirsten Lyle.

"We are all skiers, and we all live in the mountains," said Frood of the calendar's feminine but sports-oriented design.

"I think all of us are inspired by our friends and how strong, active and healthy they are, but they are still women. They are still feminine, and breast cancer still affects them. It is pretty amazing to see the stuff they are doing, and how successful these girls are in the skiing world."

The Rad Boob girls have printed 2,000 calendars with B.C.-company Wayside Printers, and they are selling them for $20 each, available online at RadBoob.com, as well as at several retail locations.

Frood said Rad Boob decided on Rethink Breast Cancer as the organization to donate all their proceeds to because of the Canadian organization's focus on young women.

"They are an organization that focuses on young people making a change," she said.

"That was really important to us because we are all young female skiers, and we live for the mountain. It is important for us to support an organization that has similar values."

In Whistler, the calendars can be found at Surefoot, Helly Hansen, Comor Sports, McCoo's, Escape Route, Fanatyk Co., and Snowcovers. Zephyr Café in Squamish and Steed Cycles in Vancouver will also be carrying them.
