Whistler gymnasts end season on a high note

Year end shows on Sunday

The Whistler Gymnastics Club made a solid end to their competitive season this past weekend at the Ogopogo Invitational in Kelowna.

This was the first meet that the club had two girls competing in Provincial Level 3, with Rebecca Flynn tumbling in the Novice category and Nicola Halliwell in Open.

Although this was her first contest this year, Flynn placed ninth all around out of 20 athletes, and earned a silver medal on the bars. Halliwell was also ninth, and earned a silver medal on the vault.

In Provincial Level 2 Open, Whistler’s Sonya D’Artois tied for second all around after winning vault, placing second on beam, third on floor and fourth on bars.

In Novice, Lenka Prochazka managed to place sixth overall with gold medals on vault and bars. She sprained her ankle during a front flip on her floor routine, but still managed a gold on the vault.

Jasmin Budge also had a solid day, winning a silver medal on her floor routine, and tying for fourth on the beam to place 10 th all around. Tyece Fairweather, Meg Halliwell and Desirae Smith were 12 th , 14 th and 15 th respectively in a tough category.

In Tyro, Mae Akama was 15 th all around in a field of 37 athletes, including competitors from as far away as Burlington, Ontario and Edmonton Alberta. Her best event was the Vault, where she placed 12 th .

Avrie Willis was ninth, Alex Shuker 20 th . Also competing were Hannah Raffler, who managed a seventh on the vault, Kartina Underhill, Ali Marriott, Jenya Vincent Nordin and Cate Sproule.

In Provincial 2 Argo, Cambria Willis was 17 th , tying for sixth on the beam. Keeley Wentzel was 21 st , and had a fourth place finish on the vault. Carly Mann’s best result was sixth on the vault and Jessie Budge was 16 th on bars.

In Level 1 Argo 1998, Ellie Krasny was sixth all around with three ribbons for finishing fifth on beam, fourth on floor and seventh on bars.

Jessica Girard was 10 th , and tied for second on floor. Charlotte Mahoney was 12 th , Meghan Marof 13 th , Jamie Gormley 16 th , Iyla Vincent Nordin 18 th , Martina Gershon 19 th , Kalea Ranger 20 th , and Kayley Ogilvie-Turner 21 st .

In Argo 1999 Catlin MacConnachie placed 12 th overall, and Martina Gershon 14 th .

In 2000-2001, Hannah Peatfield, Caleigh Lamont, Charlie Jarratt and Niki Marriott were eighth through 11 th respectively.

The Kelowna event was the last competition for the Whistler Gymnastics Club, which is hosting its annual yearend show Sunday, June 1 at Spring Creek Community School.   The theme this year is Rock and Roll.

Because of the number of programs, coaches decided to host two shows this year, one from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and another from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.
