They can mend broken skiers and boarders, set off avalanches, and ski the steepest terrain – but how are they on the balance beam?

On Friday, Feb. 15, as part of Gymnastics Awareness Week, the Whistler Gymnastics Club is going head to head against the Whistler-Blackcomb Ski Patrol in the first Annual Gymnastics Challenge.

There will be four mini stations that the two groups will square off at, and participants will be scored by judges on how well they do. The scores will be totalled after the patrollers and gymnasts have hit all the stations, and a winner will be named.

The stations are about fun, fitness and the fundamentals of gymnastics: springing, swinging, rotating, moving, landing and balancing.

It costs $2 to receive a score sheet and spectators are welcome for a donation to the Whistler Kidsport program, which helps less privileged kids pay for equipment and league fees.

The event gets underway at Myrtle Philip Community School at 7 p.m. Patrollers and gymnasts can start to warm up at 6:30.

For more information, or if you’re a gymnast or patroller who wants to participate, contact Tami Ross at 604-938-0033.
