Bennett wins silver, Rusimovich bronze against top clubs in the province

A team of Whistler gymnasts faced the best athletes from around the province in the B.C. Championships at Coquitlam last weekend, and came home with a share of the hardware and results they can all be proud of.

In the Open category for girls 14 and over, there were more than 30 competitors. All four members of the Whistler Gymnastics Club posted strong results, placing in the top-10 in at least one event.

On the bars, Whistler Secondary senior Nicola Bennett, 17, and teammate Alix Rusimovich sat second and third on the podium. Rusimovich also capture ninth place for her floor routine.

Natasha Quinn impressed the judges on the vault to finish in fourth place, and Melissa Manuel kept her cool on the beam, one of the hardest events, to finish in ninth place.

The Whistler gymnasts in the Tyro category had their work cut out for them against a field of more than 60 competitors. Niki Sadler and Kristi Poole-Adler came close, but were not able to crack the top-10. Frances Moody led the team with a sixth place finish on the bars.

The Whistler Gymnastics Club is still going strong, with members attending meets around the province though May of this year. The season will end with a gym show in Whistler for relatives, friends and fans at Whistler Secondary on June 1.
