Whistler Half Marathon sees Victoria runners on top

Men's, women's races each won by runners from Vancouver Island

Victoria figured prominently in the Whistler Half-Marathon last Saturday as two runners from the capital came out on top in the 21.1-kilometer race.

Jim Finlayson, a 38-year-old runner from Victoria who has been at his sport for 25 years, came in first of all runners with a time of 1:09:23, while Care Wakely, a 27-year-old runner also from Victoria, came in tops among women with a time of 1:21:02, which also placed her in the top ten.

"It feels good, it feels nice," Finlayson said of his first place finish. "It was a tough course but I think the pain of the running hard always feels better at the end when you position yourself well."

Top Whistler runners were Ashley McMilllan, sixth, Chris Kennedy, 11th and Mike Conway, 15th.

Saturday's course began at Olympic Plaza in Whistler Village at around 7:30 a.m. About 800 registrants signed up to run a course that took them from the Village then along Lorimer Road to Beaver Lane. They then ran down Blueberry Drive and down to Lakeside Park before turning around and coming back to the Village and to another turnaround at Rainbow Park.
